Sensor calibration is a necessary evil for any multi-sensor system. The accuracy of even the most precise and most sensitive sensors can deteriorate through wear and tear, aging, and environmental influences. Therefore, recalibration of sensors is needed at regular intervals to ensure data integrity and safe operations for any system relying on sensors. Deepen’s proprietary calibration technology can make this tedious process easier and faster.

Sensor calibration is one of the least talked about building blocks of an autonomous vehicle (AV). Accurate calibration data is critical to localization, control, mapping, and perception. It empowers AI models to see how the world looks from the viewpoint of various sensors - such as LiDARs, radars, and cameras by bringing their readings into a common framework.

To confidently represent the environment around the vehicles, both the intrinsic parameters of the individual sensors and the relative positions and orientations of the sensors have to be known. These positions are measured manually or calibrated by engineers in the current state. Depending on the sensor and type of calibration required—intrinsic, extrinsic, or temporal—engineers may spend 60 minutes to several hours - costing organizations precious hours of senior resources that could have been better utilized to solve complex problems.

Wear and tear is another challenge in ensuring high data integrity. Vibrations from driving around, mechanical and electrical shocks, thermal and pressure changes,  etc. can cause sensors to deviate - requiring re-calibration. Most organizations re-calibrate sensors every 30-90 days - primarily due to the complexity and the tedious nature of the process. However, the costs and risks associated with inaccurate calibration are much higher than the cost of calibration/recalibration. Therefore, it would be foolish to take the lazier, easier route of inadequate or low-quality calibration. Even a slight deviation in calibration measurement (say 1mm) can be catastrophic for a multi-sensor system.

We can confidently say that a higher frequency of calibrations, leads to higher safety and better quality of data collected. Calibration is not an expense, it is an investment.

With calibration playing such a key role in the advancement of safety-based computer vision technology,  Deepen AI - a leading computer vision tools and products company - developed Deepen Calibrate.

Using Deepen’s proprietary technology, users can now simply upload key parameters, set up checkerboards, and immediately visualize review, download error metrics and debug - all within minutes.

Deepen Calibrate manages the complexities of calibration by streamlining the process and providing advanced visualizations of calibration results for easy and quick review. The results are much more accurate than physical measurements while avoiding the time and expense associated with the development and maintenance of any in-house calibration tool.

“Companies with safety-critical multi-sensor systems recalibrate their systems infrequently due to the complexity and lack of expert individuals that can perform complex calibrations. Now with Deepen Calibrate, companies can bring down calibration time by almost 90% while ensuring accuracy.” - Cheuksan Wang, Co-Founder, Deepen AI

Deepen Calibrate is an easy-to-use web browser-based tool that supports both intrinsic and extrinsic calibrations.

Among extrinsic calibrations, Deepen Calibrate currently supports:

More calibration types are being added regularly.
